In today’s competitive world, higher education has become essential for both national and international students. The United States continues to be one of the most sought-after destinations for this pursuit, particularly at prestigious institutions like the University of CaliforniaLos Angeles (UCLA). UCLA currently ranks 42nd in the overall QS World Rankingssecuring its position as one of the top universities both in the US and globally.Moreover, it consistently ranks among the top 10 worldwide in several subject areas.However, gaining admission to such a renowned institution is neither easy nor affordable. To assist students financially, UCLA offers a variety of scholarships for both domestic and international applicants. One such prestigious opportunity is the Regents Scholarship, which we’ll explore today.
What is the Regents Scholarship?
Established in 1962 by the Regents of the University of California, the Regents Scholarship recognizes incoming undergraduates for their outstanding academic achievements and potential. Recipients of this scholarship are selected based on their demonstrated academic excellence, leadership, and exceptional promise.
Each year, UCLA awards up to 75 Regents Scholarships to entering freshmen and transfer students. Currently, the university has approximately 300 Regents Scholars enrolled. It’s important to note that the Regents Scholarship at UCLA is unique to its campus, meaning it cannot be transferred to other University of California campuses, and Regents Scholarships from other UC campuses are not valid at UCLA. Each campus independently manages the selection of its Regents Scholars.
Selection Process:
The Regents Scholars selection committee conducts a comprehensive review of the freshman applicant pool to assess academic preparation. Selection is based on a thorough evaluation of the student’s admissions application.
To be eligible, applicants must meet one of the following criteria:
- US citizen
- Permanent resident
- Non-citizen students qualifying under California Assembly Bills 130 or 131
Only students who meet these qualifications and demonstrate outstanding academic records are considered for the Regents Scholarship.
Student Obligations:
Regents Scholars are required to report any outside financial assistance or scholarships to UCLA’s Financial Aid and Scholarships office. They must also maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 during all quarters of attendance and enroll in at least 12 units per quarter. Any changes in academic status, such as enrolling in fewer than 12 units, dropping below a 3.0 GPA, or taking a leave of absence, must be reported to the scholarship coordinator. Failure to do so may jeopardize future eligibility for the scholarship.
Scholarship Benefits:
- All Regents Scholars are eligible for a $2,000 honorarium, regardless of financial need.
- If a scholar has additional financial needs beyond the $2,000 honorarium, UCLA will provide additional scholarships and/or grants to cover the remainder of the scholar’s financial need.
- Freshman recipients receive the scholarship for four years (12 consecutive academic quarters).
- Transfer students receive the scholarship for two years (6 consecutive academic quarters).
- The scholarship does not apply to summer quarters.
In addition to financial support, Regents Scholars receive several benefits, including:
- Priority enrollment starting in their second quarter.
- Guaranteed housing (if the housing application is submitted by the deadline).
- Guaranteed parking (if the parking application is submitted on time).
- Access to faculty mentorship, facilitated by the Regents Scholar Society.
