Report by Jitendra Kumar Sinha // Patna– In the medical field, treatment started with medicine first. After this, surgery was introduced for diseases which could not be cured by medicine. After these two, a third branch came into the medical field which was called physiotherapy and occupational therapy. It is completely different from medicine and surgery. In this treatment, problems related to disability, arthritis, blockage of nerves, blood blockage, paralysis, bone and joints, cerebral palsy etc. are treated through physical exercise and various therapies without medicine and surgery.
Common people have a notion that only handicapped patients are treated in a handicapped hospital, but this is not the case at all. All those people who are suffering from bone and nerve related diseases are treated here. In this regard, we met Dr. Kishore Kumar, the Head of the Department, Controlling Officer and DDO of the Handicapped Hospital, Patna, and obtained some information, some important excerpts of which are as follows:
Question: What is physiotherapy and occupational therapy? On which method does it work?
Dr. Kishore: This is the third branch of medical science in which bone and nerve related diseases are treated without medicine and surgery through various therapies and physical exercises. Occupational Therapy treats disabled people, nerve related diseases, autism, bone diseases and other diseases through ADL (Activities of Daily Leaving) activities, diversionary therapy, craft activities. Psycho Therapy and other methods are used to train people in the art of living a better lifestyle and for earning their livelihood. It works on the medical method only.
Question: How is it different from other pathies like allopathy, homeopathy and ayurvedic?
Dr. Kishore: In this method, patients are treated by physical exercise, electrotherapy, psychotherapy, diversionary therapy, craft activities and other methods. Medicine or surgery has no role in this.
Question: Are only handicapped patients treated here or are patients with other diseases also treated?
Dr. Kishore: Here, along with handicapped patients, diseases related to bone, joint and nerves like paralysis, arthritis, blockage of nerves, cerebral palsy (paralysis of brain) etc. are also treated.
Question: Which diseases are treated by physiotherapy and occupational therapy?
Dr. Kishore: With this method, patients suffering from disability, paralysis, cerebral palsy, nerve blockage, arthritis, bone and joint related diseases are treated.
Question: What therapies are given to the patients here?
Dr. Kishore: Here patients are given physical therapy, occupational therapy, electro therapy and other therapies.
Question: What is the procedure for getting treatment here? Is the treatment provided here absolutely free?
Dr. Kishore: To get treatment here, first of all you have to register by paying 5 rupees. After this, the doctor examines the patient in the outdoor and sends him to different rooms for treatment according to the disease. There is both outdoor and indoor facility here. There is also an indoor ward of 35 beds where helpless patients coming from far-off places are admitted. They are provided free accommodation, free food and free treatment by the Bihar government. Here treatment is absolutely free. Almost all the equipment for occupational therapy and physiotherapy are available here.
Question: What is the role of ultrasonic therapy, electro therapy, IFT and TENS in physiotherapy?
Dr. Kishore: All of these have different roles. Blood clotting, blockage of nerves, joint pain and arthritis are treated through ultrasonic therapy. Bone joint pain, arthritis pain and pain caused due to blockage of nerves are relieved through electro therapy TENS and IFT.
Question: How and where does one get a degree in Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy?
Dr. Kishore: To obtain a degree in Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy, one has to first appear in the entrance examination conducted by BCECE. Candidates who qualify in this are enrolled in Bihar College of Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy. This course is of four and a half years. Its annual examinations are conducted by Bihar Medical University. Before 2023, annual examinations were conducted by Aryabhatta University. Bihar College of Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy is the only independent college in the whole of Bihar. It is located in the campus of Patna Medical College. Classes of Anatomy, Phycology, Pathology, Biochemistry, Pharmachology, Surgery, Psychiatry are conducted here.
It is known that Dr. Kishore Kumar has been honored at the state and national level for his excellent work. By receiving honors at the national level, he has made Bihar proud in the field of medicine. He was awarded the “Certificate of Excellence” by the Chief Minister of Bihar on 11 September 2016, “Professional Excellence Award” by the All India Occupational Therapists Association on 17 February 2017, “Life Time Achievement Award” by AIIMS New Delhi in November 2023, and was nominated as a member by the “National Commission for Allied Healthcare Professions, New Delhi” on 29 May 2024.
