Popular American series Stranger Things Season 5 has become the most-watched English-language series debut in Netflix history. According to reports, the latest season of the sci-fi series drew 59.6 million views in its first five days, marking the best premiere-week viewership for an English-language series ever on the streaming platform, and the third-highest debut overall, behind only Seasons 2 and 3 of the Korean sci-fi series. This opening also reflects a dramatic rise from the launch numbers of Season 4. That season opened with 287 million hours watched, which, under Netflix’s older measurement system, translates to about 22 million views. The Season 5 debut therefore represents an increase of about 171%, with the note that Season 5 metrics were counted over five days while Season 4’s were tracked over three.
Even before the premiere, anticipation drove audience momentum. Last week, all four previous seasons of Stranger Things made the Netflix Top 10 — the first time any series has had four different seasons on the chart. According to a report in Variety, by the last week of November, the show set yet another record, marking the first time a single title had five seasons on the Top 10 list. Season 5 was no. 1, followed by Season 1 at No. 3 with 8.9 million views, Season 4 at No. 5 with 6.1 million views, Season 2 at No. 6 with 5.6 million views, and Season 3 at No. 8 with 4.6 million views.
Only the first four episodes of Season 5 have been released so far. Another three episodes debut on Christmas Day, with the series finale following on New Year’s Eve. With new installments still pending, the series is expected to dominate the chart for weeks, if not months.
The scale of the premiere even briefly strained the streaming giants’ infrastructure. According to co-creator Ross Duffer, the influx of viewers caused the platform to freeze during the launch, despite the streamer having “increased bandwidth by 30% to avoid a crash.”
Stranger Things premiered in 2016 and quickly became one of Netflix’s signature global franchises. The series helped propel the careers of Millie Bobby Brown, Joe Keery, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Finn Wolfhard, Noah Schnapp, Caleb McLaughlin, Sadie Sink and Gaten Matarazzo, alongside returning leads Winona Ryder and David Harbour. The final season returns to Hawkins, Indiana, now with a time jump to accommodate the aging cast.
